What fruit, vegetables and fish can be produced in an aquaponic system?
In Future Farming we can see to every detail when setting up the conditions for life of fish and plants. From the water and air temperatures to very exact parameters of pH or oxygen dissolved in the water. This enables us to grow nearly any fresh-water organism and to combine them with vegetables and fruit efficiently. We can also grow very exotic vegetable varieties, which otherwise have to be imported from other parts of the world.
Why is lighting so important in aquaponics?
The light provides energy for the plants. Our farms use the sun light, which is of course the best thing for the plants, but in our latitude, we have to use artificial light too, especially in winter. Owing to the advancement of LED technology, and thanks to the most up-to-date research of photosynthesis and chlorophyll we are able to design these lights exactly for the need of every single plant. In this way, electricity consumption can be optimized and the plants get exactly what they need. It took many years of research and testing. The most recent studies of Dutch producers of crop lighting prove, that the quality of the plants grown under artificial light is the same as the quality of plants grown in the sun light. So in this area we rely on state-of-the-art technology.
Why are bacteria used in aquaponics?
Bacteria play a key role in the nutrient cycle. Similar to human beings who have about 2 kg of bacteria in their bowels to be able to absorb nutrients from food efficiently, in aquaponic system these bacteria transform fish metabolic products into nutrients for plants. The first colony of bacteria is in the intestines of fish, where they process food. The other colony lives in biological filters. Both colonies are monitored and replenished if necessary. The key is the use of a special feed that the bacteria are used to and then the entire process runs very efficiently. If the bacterial colonies are disrupted, for example by the use of chemicals or antibiotics, the processes of fermentation or decomposition prevail and the entire aquaponic system will stop functioning. That is why using these substances is inadmissible in aquaponics. The colonies are formed by dozens of bacteria species that together do exactly what we need them to do. We have invested huge amounts of money in this area to research suitable types of bacteria and it is a crucial part of our expertise. Inappropriate handling of feed and bacteria are the most frequent reason why aquaponics does not work for some people or even why it starts collapsing.
Is aquaponics better in open or closed spaces?
Each application has its pros and cons. In a closed space higher yields can be reached and they can be operated year round. However, it is at a cost of increased energy consumption. In outdoor applications the energy consumption is minimal, but its operation is only seasonal. Other differences lie in the requirements for environmental hygiene and observance of qualitative requirements. Outdoor applications can never meet the standards set by AQP Food for the food of absolute quality.
